چکیده

Studies of past emergency events indicate that evacuating occupants often exhibit social behaviors that affect the evacuation process. This paper describes a multiagent-based simulation framework that enables the modeling of social behaviors during evacuation. Each agent is modeled using a three-level representation that allows users to incorporate individual, group, and crowd behavioral rules in the simulation. The authors describe the basic framework and the implementation of several social behaviors, which are based on recent social science studies about human responses in emergency situations. Simulation results from the prototype reveal that social behaviors exhibited by an evacuating crowd can have an effect on the overall egress time and pattern. By representing the virtual agents and the environment specific to an evacuation situation, the research addresses the issues in incorporating human and social behaviors in egress simulations. Human and social behavior in computational modeling and analysis of egress

Safe egress is one of the key design issues identified by facility planners, manager and inspectors. Computational tools are now available for the simulation and design of emergency evacuation and egress. However, these tools rely heavily on assumptions about individual human and social behaviors, which have been found to be oversimplified, inconsistent and even incorrect. Furthermore, the beha...

Research Spotlight

Introduction Recent natural and man-made disastrous events underscore the importance of emergency evacuation planning and management for buildings and facilities (Averill et al., 2005). Although building codes include provisions for egress design, their prescriptive nature poses many limitations in terms of providing effective evacuation for specific buildings, each of which is unique. Human be...

CIFECENTER FOR INTEGRATED FACILITY ENGINEERING Computational Modeling of Human and Social Behaviors for Emergency Egress Analysis

This dissertation addresses the problem of bringing the perspectives of psychology and sociology about human behavior in emergencies into computational models for egress analysis. Efficacious analysis of emergency egress is facilitated by incorporation of diverse human behavior into a Multi-Agent Simulation System for Egress analysis (MASSEgress). MASSEgress adopts a multi-agent based simulatio...

Incorporating Social Behaviors in Egress Simulation

Emergency evacuation (egress) is considered one of the most important issues in the design of buildings and public facilities. Given the complexity and variability in an evacuation situation, computational simulation tool is often used to help assess the performance of an egress design. Studies have revealed that social behaviors can have significant influence on the evacuating crowd during an ...
